ANAVAR 20
Oxandrolone Tablets
PRODUCT NAME & PACKAGING
Brand Name: ANAVAR 20
Generic Name: Oxandrolone
Strength & Packaging: 50 tablets per tub | 20 mg per tablet
Oxandrolone is an oral anabolic steroid. In current U.S. DailyMed labeling, oxandrolone tablets are listed in 2.5 mg and 10 mg strengths, so a 20 mg tablet should be presented as a manufacturer-specific strength rather than a standard U.S.-labeled presentation. Oxandrolone is also listed as a Schedule III controlled substance.
DESCRIPTION
ANAVAR 20 contains oxandrolone, a synthetic anabolic steroid. The official DailyMed label describes oxandrolone as 17β-hydroxy-17α-methyl-2-oxa-5α-androstan-3-one and classifies it within the anabolic steroid group, which has both anabolic and androgenic effects.
INDICATIONS
In current U.S. labeling, oxandrolone is indicated as adjunctive therapy to help offset the protein catabolism associated with prolonged corticosteroid use and for relief of bone pain frequently accompanying osteoporosis. For this 20 mg brand-specific presentation, use should follow the manufacturer’s labeling, local regulations, and licensed-prescriber judgment.
DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION
Route: Oral administration
Reference U.S. labeling states that adult oxandrolone dosing is 2.5 mg to 20 mg daily in 2 to 4 divided doses, with therapy typically used intermittently; pediatric dosing is listed as less than 0.1 mg/kg/day. Because this product is a 20 mg tablet presentation, a pharmacy-catalog entry is best stated as:
“Administer only under the direction of a licensed healthcare professional and in accordance with the manufacturer’s labeling, therapeutic goals, and patient-specific clinical judgment.”
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Oxandrolone belongs to the anabolic steroid class. Current labeling states that anabolic steroids are synthetic derivatives of testosterone, may suppress pituitary gonadotropic function, inhibit luteinizing hormone (LH) release during exogenous use, and at higher doses may suppress follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and spermatogenesis.
PRECAUTIONS
Use requires careful medical oversight. The official label warns about cholestatic hepatitis/jaundice, edema that can be serious in patients with cardiac, renal, or hepatic disease, and lipid changes associated with higher cardiovascular risk. It also highlights a major interaction with warfarin, where INR/PT can rise substantially and bleeding risk can increase. Oxandrolone is contraindicated in pregnancy because of possible masculinization of the fetus, and women should be monitored for virilization.
SIDE EFFECTS
Adverse effects reported in the official label include acne, gynecomastia, nausea, vomiting, edema, insomnia, depression, libido changes, and androgen-related effects. In females, these may include deepening of the voice, hirsutism, clitoral enlargement, and menstrual irregularities; in males, reported effects include testicular atrophy, oligospermia, and changes in sexual function. The boxed warning also notes serious long-term risks such as peliosis hepatis and hepatic tumors.
STORAGE
Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F), consistent with USP Controlled Room Temperature guidance in the current DailyMed labeling. Keep the product in its original container and dispense according to applicable prescription-drug requirements.
