Brand Name: ASPADOL
Generic Name: Tapentadol
Strength & Packaging: 100 × 100 mg tablets. “Aspadol” is marketed as a tapentadol product, and 100 mg is a recognized immediate-release tablet strength for tapentadol.
Description
Tapentadol is an opioid analgesic used for the management of pain severe enough to require an opioid analgesic when alternative treatments are inadequate. It has a dual mode of action that contributes to its analgesic effect and should be used only under qualified medical supervision.
Indications
Tapentadol immediate-release tablets are indicated for the management of acute pain severe enough to require an opioid analgesic and for which alternative treatments are inadequate. Approved indications can vary by country and product labeling.
Dosage & Administration
Dosage must be individualized based on pain severity, prior analgesic treatment, and patient risk factors. Standard prescribing references for immediate-release tapentadol commonly include 50 mg, 75 mg, or 100 mg orally every 4 to 6 hours as needed, using the lowest effective dose for the shortest appropriate duration. Administration should follow the prescriber’s instructions and local approved labeling.
Mechanism of Action
Tapentadol works through a dual mechanism: it acts as a mu-opioid receptor agonist and also inhibits norepinephrine reuptake. These combined actions help reduce pain perception.
Precautions
Tapentadol carries important risks including respiratory depression, misuse, abuse, addiction, dependence, and withdrawal. It should be used with caution in patients with respiratory disease, head injury, seizure risk, hepatic or renal impairment, or those taking other CNS depressants. Concomitant use with alcohol, benzodiazepines, or serotonergic medicines may increase the risk of serious adverse effects.
Side Effects
Common adverse effects may include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, constipation, and dry mouth. Serious adverse reactions can include life-threatening breathing problems, profound sedation, and dependence-related effects.
Storage
Store at 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F) in a dry place, protected from moisture, and keep out of reach of children. Because tapentadol is an opioid product, it should be stored securely.
