Product Name & Packaging
Brand Name: DOXYCYCLINE
Generic Name: Doxycycline hyclate
Strength & Packaging: 100 × 100 mg tablets/capsules. Doxycycline 100 mg is a standard marketed strength; the exact dosage form should be confirmed from the product label.
Description
Doxycycline hyclate is a broad-spectrum tetracycline-class antibacterial agent used in the treatment of susceptible bacterial infections. It is prescribed for a wide range of infectious conditions and should be used only when clinically appropriate to help reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria.
Indications
Doxycycline is indicated for the treatment of various infections caused by susceptible organisms, including selected respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, urinary tract infections, certain sexually transmitted infections, ophthalmic infections such as trachoma, and other tetracycline-susceptible infections. In some labeled products, it is also used for malaria prophylaxis and anthrax post-exposure prophylaxis.
Dosage & Administration
In adults, the usual oral dose is 200 mg on the first day of treatment (administered as 100 mg every 12 hours), followed by a maintenance dose of 100 mg once daily. In more severe infections, 100 mg every 12 hours may be recommended. Dosage should be individualized according to the indication, infection severity, and prescriber guidance.
Mechanism of Action
Doxycycline is an antibacterial drug that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, thereby suppressing the growth of susceptible organisms.
Precautions
Doxycycline should be used with caution in patients with hypersensitivity to tetracyclines. As with other tetracycline-class agents, it may cause photosensitivity and should generally be avoided during tooth development because of the risk of permanent tooth discoloration. It should be used only for proven or strongly suspected bacterial infections.
Side Effects
Common adverse effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and photosensitivity reactions. As with other antibiotics, hypersensitivity and other gastrointestinal adverse effects may also occur.
Storage
Store at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F) at controlled room temperature. Protect from light and moisture, and dispense/store in a tight, light-resistant container with appropriate closure.
